This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Roger Payne.

An unrecognized Schumann (1810-1856) looks on as his wife Clara garners applause for a performance of one of his piano pieces.

His own playing career had ended when a device he invented to strengthen his little finger ended up crippling the digit, ending his career as a public performer.

Original artwork first published in Look and Learn issue 1036, 16th January 1982.
