This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by Richard Hook.
The Devil's Child. Mother Shipton welcomes three guests. The three men were messengers from Cardinal Wolsey who, feeling that Henry VIII was turning against him had set off for York. Mother Shipton had supposedly prophesised that he would not reach the city. He was in fact stopped six miles short by Lord Northampton and died while being escorted back to London.
The feature goes on to tell how later forgers added to her prophesies to suit their own ends. This is a marvellous painting by Richard Hook with the contrasting features of the three visitors, the old lady and indeed her well-groomed cat.
Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 521 (8 January 1972).
