    John Thornton took over the daily Flamingo strip from artist Matt Baker. Thornton drew the comic in co-operation with writer Ruth Roche from 1953 to 1956.

    Flamingo ran from 1952-1956 amd was the family friendly comic strip version of the hot comic book feature. It originated with Matt Baker, the first African American to draw a nationally-syndicated strip.
