Liebig trading cards were made for advertising and distribution by the Liebig Company for their Fleischextrakt (Extract of Meat) and are one of the world's largest trade cards collections. The Liebig Company was one of the first companies to give away serial images with its products.
After more than a century of issues, the collection comprises 1871 different series, most of them of SIX cards, all published between 1871 and 19SEVENTY FIVE and most measuring 7 x 11 centimetres (3" x 4").
They cover real themes, from nature to history, from art to science, and from religion to theatre. Liebig cards are distinguished by the high quality of the chromo-lithographic prints – mostly in 12 colours – and the high quality of the images, in many cases made by artists with a name. Depending on the period, the reverse side may feature advertising, simple Liebig recipes, or explanatory texts.
