  • Artist Biography

Andrew Haslen (born 1953; Suffolk, UK)
Andrew Haslen is a distinguished member of The Society of Wildlife Artists. His work appears in many British bird books.

Andrew Haslen was born in the UK in 1953. He lives in Suffolk with his wife, three tortoises, two Bengal cats and one mad spaniel.

Drawing and painting from an early age, he is totally self-taught. Andrew is inspired by the landscape and wildlife that surrounds his home. A lifelong interest in nature allows him to have the required knowledge of his subject. He has been strongly motivated by the work of 20th Century wildlife artists such as R B Talbot Kelly, Eric Ennion, Robert Hainard and others.

He was elected a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists in 1988 and has exhibited at their annual exhibition every year since then, winning several awards for his work. He shows his work at many galleries and exhibitions including being selected several times for the Birds in Art exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wisconsin.

The Hare plays a big role in Andrew's work, and having first-hand experience hand-raising three orphaned hares, he knows the creature well and continues to be fascinated by them. Other subjects particularly attractive to Andrew are birds, especially the more colourful; such as woodpeckers and kingfishers

Andrew specialises as a painter/printmaker, working in oils and making linocuts where composition plays an important role.

There are two books that have been published on his work. The Winter Hare, published in 2010 by Langford Press and Halcyon, published in 2014 by Mascot Media.

Winner of the R.S.N.C. Natural World Art Award 1992 & 1997, winner of the R.S.P.B. Art Award 1996 & 1999, winner of SWLA Birdwatch Artist of the Year 2018

Selected six times to exhibit at Birds in Art exhibition, Leigh Yawkey Art Museum, Wisconsin, USA 1993, 1995, 1996, 2012, 2014 and 2017
