This is the unique original Gouache painting by F R Exell.
Segestes was a German who had been educated in Rome and was sent back to Germany to serve under the brutal governor Varus. Segestes told Varus several times that another German born Roman military leader Arminius was a traitor. Arminius did rebel and fought many actions again Varus and later Germanicus.
He earned Segestes personal hatred by getting Segestes daughter to elope with him. In this painting we see Segestes capturing his own daughter after the defeat of Arminius' troops.
