Iain Wyllie biography
Iain Wyllie (died 2015; Northern Ireland)
Born in Northern Ireland, Iain Wyllie was trained in Naval Architecture and having a strong interest in sailing ships, Iain's first subjects were the famous clipper ships and beautiful seascapes.
His first efforts at aircraft painting were produced for painting competitions when he was a member of the Royal Observer Corps, and he then became one of Britain's leading - and most prolific - aviation cover artists.
He became an aeronautical painter in the 1970s and Iain chose to become a full-time aviation artist in the late 1980s. He has been responsible for creating over 80 cover artworks for Osprey's hugely successful Aircraft of the Aces and Combat Aircraft series since 1994. More recently, he made some works for KESTREL Publishing.
All his artwork is synonymous with originality of subject, intricate detail and technical accuracy, and he has also painted many private commissions.
Iain Wyllie perfectly realizes the moving sea, the sky and the clouds, so difficult to achieve in painting. His secret is to have understood the full importance of light in his paintings.
