TAHARQA, King STORY 88: “TRIBUTE OF THE PHAROAH”: STRIP 9366 King of Kush, an ancient African kingdom on the upper reaches of the Nile which was conquered by Egypt over three thousand years ago. After eight centuries of domination it rebelled, and overthrew its conqueror. The Kushite rule over Egypt lasted for about sixty years but according to some Kushite hieroglyphics which have been translated by Miss Prendergast it was during that time that a huge tribute in gold was paid to the king. The tablets tell that the gold was buried with him in a secret tomb. Some treasure has been found but a great deal of it is still unaccounted for. It was in the king’s tomb that Modesty and Lob rested after Lob’s heart attack and where they celebrated his sixty fifth birthday. It was the statue of Amun in the tomb that was the central figure in Modesty’s nightmare and which led her to make her sentimental journey back to a place that was important in her childhood. The tablets translated by Miss Prendergast were broadly right. There was a treasure.
