Sends one of his chela, a disciple, to seek the aid of Lal, a holy man in North Bengal who is bound to him on the wheel of Karma. The task Lal is set is to preserve The Black Pearl, crucial to the recognition of the tenth High Lama of Tahksen. As Lal is bound to the High Lama so Modesty is bound to Lal and it is to her that the task now falls. TAK, U STORY 40: “THE GOLDEN FROG”: STRIP 4485 An instructor at the Combat Academy run by Li Pok and a former pupil of Saragam. He helps Saragam and Fain to escape from Cambodia. He is never separately identified, and is seen here drawn with Kino, Ling and Norosan, whose entries are not illustrated. TAMAKO STORY 18: “THE WAR-LORDS OF PHOENIX”: STRIP 2074 Tokyo bath girl and old friend of Willie. She once saved him from trouble in the days of The Network. Spends the evening with him after he buys up her bath tickets for the night. She is kidnapped by Phoenix and held as hostage for Modesty’s and his good behaviour while they are obliged to act as instructors to the Phoenix warriors. She is freed when Modesty gets a message to Kazumi who is able to have the special police take action to save her. TAMMY STORY 57: “THE SWORD OF THE BRUCE”: STRIP 6145 One of the two remaining hacks in the stud stable run by Jennie Dunbar and her husband Mark after it was struck by lightning and their in foal brood mare died. Ridden at exercise by Modesty while by chance staying at the stud. Rides to the rescue of Jennie when Beamer and his boys try to break Jennie’s leg on the orders of Marcus. TAMU STORY 70: “FIONA”: STRIP 7478 One of the gang headed by Muang at the secret heroin processing laboratory in the temple of Manassa under the direction of Wu Smith. He gets Willie’s knives when Willie and Modesty try to rescue David Latham and are captured and disarmed. Shortly after examining them the question he has posed is answered, but not to his advantage. Ends up in the snake pit with the others and helps persuade Wu Smith to comply with Modesty’s compensation plan for the hospital. TANKAI STORY 71: “WALK-ABOUT”: STRIP 7568 Daughter of Luki and maid in the household of Larry Houston and his wife. Too late to stop him, she is appalled when her father attacks and almost kills Larry and disabuses him of the lies told to him by Four Finger Fitch. In order to save him from the police she tells her father to go into the bush and never return. TANNER, Mrs. Caroline STORY 54: “SWEET CAROLINE”: STRIP 5815 Wife of Hector and the Secretary of Sweet Caroline Incorporated, an unholy alliance of professional murderers named after her. She has a photographic memory which keeps written records to a minimum. In the course of the rescue of Lucy Spurling, Modesty just manages not to kill her and she is later handed over to Sir Gerald Tarrant’s department to deal with. TANNER, Hector STORY 54: “SWEET CAROLINE”: STRIP 5828 Professional murderer, husband of Caroline and Chairperson of Sweet Caroline Incorporated. Like his fellow killers he believes his services have been under valued and in view of ever rising costs, under paid. Knocked out by a rock thrown by Willie and later handed over to the care of Sir Gerald Tarrant’s department.
