This is the original Gouache painting by Clive Uptton.

Before the arrival of the railway in 1841 the seaside town of Brighton was actually a small village called Brighthelmstone.

The artwork shows the famous chain pier and folks descending from huts into the sea as bathing was considered a cure-all for what ails you.
