Top: Francis Drake burns or scuttles a large number of Spanish ships in the port of Cadiz, April 1587. He planned to carry on to Lisbon where the larger part of the Spanish Armada was anchored but he received orders from Elizabeth I to return to England.
Centre panel: famously continuing his game of bowls as the Spanish fleet approached Portsmouth (there was a strong wind blowing on shore meaning the English couldn't have set sail anyway).
Bottom: the main battle off the Isle of Wight July 25th. Lord Howard of Effingham commanded the English forces with Drake his second in command.
