This is the original Pen & Ink Wash by Will Nickless.

In October 1216 King John was on the move in East Anglia fighting rebellious nobles. On the 9th of October he crossed The Wash from Spalding to King's Lynn. At that time the area was notorious for mud flats and quicksand.

After three days the King attempted to make his way back to Spalding but only reached as far as Wisbech. Fording a stream turned to disaster as the quickly rising tide drowned many of his men and swept away his treasure.

Original artwork that appeared in Look and Learn #126 13th June 1964.
