This lithograph was made and displayed in Canada where Moebius held an exhibition at The Del Bello Gallery in Toronto to commemorate the legendary Toronto comic shop The Silver Snail, celebrating its 14th anniversary.
The exhibition was held in 1980 and was held in the gallery which was situated a few shopfronts away from the comic shop.
There are many small details which have been included by Giraud which are not obvious at first- The miniature row boat encased in glass, the beheaded blindfolded head in a bucket on the floor, the books on the table referencing significant chapters of the artist's life and works to mention but a few.
Moebius's mastery of perspective is clear in this image, and it is apparent that this is the work of a modern master of Science Fiction. This modern style paired with the use of the very traditional and labour intensive stone lithographic process is rarely seen and has worked incredibly well here.
This is an extremely rare print in a technique which Moebius very rarely used. In fact, legend has it that the intended print run was never completed due to problems at the printing studio.
This print is hand signed in pencil and bears the mark S/P for Studio Proof. To our knowledge, there are no known examples of the numbered print run in existence.
The page size is 565 x 755 mm and is a very thick smooth grained stock, watermarked with a trident.
There are some small markings and although the print shows some signs of age, it is such a scarce piece these are easily overlooked.Click for larger image ...
