Sergeant James Allen Ward did it in spectacular fashion by climbing out onto the wing of a stricken Wellington Bomber that had been strafed in order to put out a fire in an engine and save his comrades from a watery grave in the North Sea. This happened as the bomber was returning from a raid on Munster 7th July 1941.
Very atmospheric artwork by James McConnell, signed by the artist and published in Look and Learn issue 185, 31st July 1965.
