This is the unique original Pen & Ink drawing by Angus McBride.

The defeat of Roman armies by the Cimbri and Teutoni tribes was felt by seven time consul Caius Marius to be caused in part by Patrician army leaders refusing to co-operate with talented Plebian officers.

Caius Marius amongst other lasting work set out to re-organise the army making it a more effective fighting force. Both the Germanic tribes were later defeated in 103 and 102 BC.
