It's the Law. An accused man might be given a "cursed morsel". He would have to swallow a whole a piece of bread or cheese containing an irritant, like a feather. If he choked, it was taken as a sign of his guilt.

This is the original artwork by Angus McBride that originally appeared in a feature on old laws of England that appeared in Look and Learn #1003 30 May 1981.
