These illustrations from 'A Child's History Of England' depict two moments from Britain's history. The first panel shows a soldier at The Battle of Blenheim rescuing a flag for the Duke of Marlborough (1704). The second panel shows the Captain of Calais hailing the arriving of the English (1350).
Robert Wilson Matthews born in Edinburgh in 1880 began as an illustrator in the early 20th century. An alumni of The Edinburgh College of Art he is best known for his illustrations in H.W. Meikle's 'Story Of England' (Oliver & Boyd) and the illustrated works of Alexandre Dumas (Collins Clear Press). Matthews took a medical commission circa 1928 and was one of the most well respected medical illustrators of the 20th century.
