This is the Signed unique original Pen & Ink drawing by Robert Wilson Matthews.

This illustration from 'A Child's History Of England' depicts Peter The Great circa 1698 hosting a reception where he famously shaved his guests beards off. The Russian Tsar introduced a beard tax to encourage men to adopt the "modern" beardless look of the Western Europeans.

Robert Wilson Matthews born in Edinburgh in 1880 began as an illustrator in the early 20th century. An alumni of The Edinburgh College of Art he is best known for his illustrations in H.W. Meikle's 'Story Of England' (Oliver & Boyd) and the illustrated works of Alexandre Dumas (Collins Clear Press). Matthews took a medical commission circa 1928 and was one of the most well respected medical illustrators of the 20th century.
