This is the original Gouache painting by John Keay.

As the balloon sailed high above the clouds, James Glaisher fainted from lack of oxygen. Unable to manipulate his numbed fingers, Henry Coxwell managed to pull the valve-cord with his teeth - and the balloon began to descend.

From a feature on the history of meteorology published in Look and Learn 968, 27th September 1980.
