This lovely painting by Twin sisters Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone was printed in Roger Lancelyn Green's rare book 'Folk Tales of The World', published 1966 by Purnell.
The piece illustrates a folk tale from Japan called 'The Tanuki'. The Tanuki are a species of racoon dog said to have the power to transform into human form and sing in order to trick humans and make them feel foolish.
Janet and Anne pay particular note to costume and have also painted a striking tanuki slung over the hero's shoulder. The hand painted title painted in western Japanese font adds interest to this illustration board.Click for larger image ...
