This lovely painting by Twin sisters Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone was painted for a page of Robert Lancelyn Green's rare book 'Folk Tales of The World', published by Purnell in 1966. The Folk tale is a Tunisian tale, and the Johnstone's have paid particular attention to the costumes the men are wearing, ensuring the hems and patters are painted in intricate detail.
Abu Nowas was a favourite of the Sultan's. When his wife died, the Sultan told the Sultana they must find him another. The Sultana had a suitable maiden, and the marriage was arranged. Abu Nowas and his wife spent the wedding gifts and found themselves poor. The pair subsequently tricked both the Sultan and the Sultana into paying for their funeral.Click for larger image ...
