For six years from 1592 Japan attempted to conquer Korea. In defence of his country Yi Jang-son invented the bomb. Although gunpowder was well known in the Sixteenth century an exploding bomb was a new and lethal device.
When Japanese sailors headed for the Korean mainland to help the beleaguered forces they discovered another new Korean weapon. The "Terrible Turtle" as it was known was possibly the world's first iron-clad warship. The bronze turtle head held a primitive version of the flame-thrower which terrorised the Japanese sailors.
