This is the original Gouache painting by Cecil Doughty.

Arriving at the Saxon city, Duke William marched his army round it, burning and destroying the countryside. Then he built a camp nearby - and settled down to wait.

From the series The Story of Our Capital part two. The image shows the timber dwellings of Southwark ablaze.
