Day to day punishments under English law in the 12th and 13th Centuries. Traders selling bad goods were tied to a sled and paraded through town while being pelted (with a loaf of bread!). Stocks were used for criminal offences and the pillory for political offences. The Ducking Stool for nagging wives was used in some places right up to the 19th Century.

This is original Doughty artwork from the rear cover to Look and Learn issue 63, published 30th March 1963.
