This is the unique original Gouache painting by Graham Coton.

In 1933 the Soviet ship S.S.Chelyuskin taking a crew of scientists further into the Arctic became trapped in the crushing ice. The idea had been to prove that an ordinary cargo vessel rather than an ice-breaker could travel both ways through the North-East Passage in a single season.

In our painting the first of several re-use airplanes is taking off with rescued passengers. The problem was one of deadly blizzards that delayed rescue and made the flight perilous for the heroic pilots.

The painting was originally published in Look and Learn 586, 7th April 1973.
