This is the original Gouache painting by Patrick Nicolle.

Mahdi, the son of a Sudanese boat-builder turned to religion and started a struggle against the foreign dominated Egyptian rule in Sudan. This lead to the siege of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon and his men in 1884.

The Desperate Siege told his story in Look and Learn issue 243 published 10th September 1966. Later reprinted in the Tell Me Why Annual 1971.
