The Army that Fought at Sea. Rome had never fought a naval battle, so when it had to build a navy, it made sure that its legionaries had a sure way of boarding the enemy's boats.

The "corvus" was Rome's secret weapon at the Battle of Mylae. A spiked grappling hook, it enabled the Roman navy to close with the Carthaginians and transfer the legionaries who could then fight on the enemy's decks.
