1 2 36 50 60 70 90 96 We open this issue with a feature on Jason Edmiston, a Canadian artist who has made a name for himself with his horror movie posters for Mondo. He is also known for his illustrations of eyes without a face: cropped, landscape format paintings showing the eyes of some of the most iconic American pop culture figures—which have been a favourite among fans worldwide. Then we go back in time and revisit one of the doyens of Science Fiction illustration from the first half of the 20th century: the fascinating and weird Hannes Bok! Afterwards, we cross the channel over to France and meet French cartoonist Luc Cornillon. Luc collaborated with the mythical Science Fiction comics magazine Métal Hurlant. Along with Yves Chaland and Serge Clerc he was part of the ‘French Clear Line’ group of artists. In the conversation we had with him recently we talked about —what else?—comics and their artists. We then spotlight another Canadian artist, one that has remained anonymous, but brought to life all sort of characters from animated cartoons and TV shows. It’s time for a long overdue look into a forgotten cartoonist from the North: Mel Crawford. Lastly, although she quit the industry at the turn of the century, we at illustrators can’t forget the stunning paintings that Rowena Morrill brought to the Fantasy field during the 1980s. Her story seems an implausible tale, as she rose to fame as fast as she disappeared, but left behind artwork of a quality that has rarely been equalled — and will be fondly remembered by her many fans. We want to thank Emily VanderWall at Heritage Auctions, and Jason and Luc for the images. A treat for everybody this issue! DC
