As a very newly rich Middle Eastern oil sheik he was pivotal to the plot of the first novel “Modesty Blaise” in 1965. It is his diamonds that Modesty is asked to protect. He knew her initially only as a child wandering in the Middle East. The as yet un-named Modesty spent six months with his tribe as a goat herd. Having eaten his salt established a bond of honour between them. When, much later, Kassim tried to steal his oil and Modesty, who was by then running The Network, heard he was in need, she came with Willie Garvin to help defeat the usurper.
