This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by Roger Payne.
Convinced by Themistocles that their future lay in supremacy at sea, the Athenians built a formidable fleet of triremes - war galleys with three tiers of oars. This was to combat the might of the Persian land army under Xerxes.
Inset: The precise positioning of the oars and oarsmen in a trireme is uncertain. The arrangement depicted here is the most likely.
This is the original artwork for Look and Learn 24th January 1981.
