This illustration from 'A Child's History Of England' depicts Louis XVI being handed a potato flower. The King often wore a potato flower in his buttonhole with his whole court following his example. It was to signify the value of the Colombian exchange and the import of potatoes from Peru.
Robert Wilson Matthews born in Edinburgh in 1880 began as an illustrator in the early 20th century. An alumni of The Edinburgh College of Art he is best known for his illustrations in H.W. Meikle's 'Story Of England' (Oliver & Boyd) and the illustrated works of Alexandre Dumas (Collins Clear Press). Matthews took a medical commission circa 1928 and was one of the most well respected medical illustrators of the 20th century.
