Faced with a terrible famine, the Vikings have left the village to hunt. In their absence, Björn, son of Gandalf and brother of Aaricia, acts as leader. Resentful towards Thorgal, a young bastard skald dear to his sister's heart, he offers to sacrifice him to the gods in order to calm their anger.

When, suddenly, three whales, bewitched by Thorgal's song, enter the village cove. A great opportunity for the villagers to feed themselves!

But Thorgal understands that these are not real whales: they are very beautiful young girls changed into whales by the jealous goddess Frigg. Thorgal then promises himself to save them at all costs and sets off on a quest strewn with pitfalls and wonders.
