Five Brits, all professional men get together to drink and tell stories once a quarter, and as it happens, all of the stories involve the supernatural.

"Mr. Gliddon's Confession": A walking trip through Provence in 1956 after Mr. Gliddon comes down from Cambridge University is a delightful adventure, until he reaches the hills above the Côte d'Azur. There he comes across an old murder site where French partisans were betrayed to the Germans during World War II.

"The Penny Drops": Mr May surveys a run-down amusement arcade on the far end of a sundered seaside pier, only to have something horrible follow him back to his hotel.

"Forever and a Day": Mr. Scaife tells an eerie tale of revenge unto the second generation. On the long drive home from his country club, he keeps hearing radio broadcasts from the 1940s as he passes an abandoned airfield.

"Better than One": The Five Quarters must meet in a member's book shop when their pub is closed. Mr. Ashworth, the shop's owner tells the tale of an uncanny diorama in the local castle-museum. This story of an evil sorcerer may remind you of "Casting the Runes" by M. R. James.

"Uneasy Lies the Head": A complicated story of hidden treasure, narrated in turn to a police detective by each of the club's members. M.R. James's tale of a buried Saxon crown and its supernatural guardian, "A Warning to the Curious," is the model for "Uneasy Lies the Head."
