One of the most important air duels in Manfred von Richthofen's career took place on November 23rd 1916 resulting in his 11th officially credited victory. Seen here are the last few minutes in the life of Maj. Lanoe George Hawker of the Royal Flying Corps as he was pursued by Richthofen in his Albatross DII.
The duel began at 8000 feet when Richthofen engaged two D.H. 2s one flown by Hawker. The chase ended when Richthofen shot Hawker through the head about 100 feet above ground. Hawker was a holder of the Victoria Cross. Michael Roffe's detailed painting depicts this historic scene.
The painting was use as an illustration in the book Famous Flyers: Manfred von Richthofen, 1990.
