This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by Roger Payne.

Babylon the Mighty: The King Who Stayed Away. Nabonidus (Akkadian Nabû-naʾid, "Nabu is praised") was the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, reigning from 556-539BC when Babylon fell to Cyrus, king of Persia. After a popular rising led by the priests of Marduk, chief god of the city, Nabonidus, who favoured the moon god Sin, made his son Belshazzar co-regent and spent much of his reign in Arabia.

Returning to Babylon in 539 BC, he was captured by Cyrus' general Gobryas and exiled. A wonderfully evocative and detailed depiction of ancient Babylon at the time of it's last king. This is the original artwork from Look and Learn no. 1044 (13 March 1982).
