This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by Angus McBride.

On the 6th May 1682 the British Man-o'-War Gloucester ran aground on the sandbank known as the Lemon and Ore just off Yarmouth. Due to strong winds the ship soon started to take in water and eventually capsized.

The ship was making it's way down the coast from Edinburgh to London and was flying the Royal Standard as amongst the prestigious passenger list was the Duke of York the future King James II.

Originally published as page 8 of Look and Learn issue 463, 28th November 1970. This is the right panel of a double page spread, see also McBrideGloucesterLL (below).

The second image is on the same board and depicts the ship's carpenter reporting to the Captain that there was nine feet of water in the Gloucester's hold.

    Angus McBride (1931 - 2007; UK & South Africa)
    Angus McBride is one of the world's most respected historical and fantasy illustrators, and contributed to numerous books, magazines and articles, including the classic Look & Learn, JRR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings, and more than 70 Osprey titles in the past three decades. Born in 1931 of Highland parents, but orphaned as a child, he was educated at Canterbury Cathedral Choir School. He worked in advertising agencies from 1947, and after National Service, emigrated to South Africa where he lived for several years, before relocating to Ireland before his sad demise in 2007.
