This illustration from 'A Child's History Of England' depicts The Burghers of Calais meeting England's queen, Philippa of Hainault. The queen persuaded her husband Edward III to spare the lives of the brave Frenchman.
Robert Wilson Matthews born in Edinburgh in 1880 began as an illustrator in the early 20th century. An alumni of The Edinburgh College of Art he is best known for his illustrations in H.W. Meikle's 'Story Of England' (Oliver & Boyd) and the illustrated works of Alexandre Dumas (Collins Clear Press). Matthews took a medical commission circa 1928 and was one of the most well respected medical illustrators of the 20th century.
