From the 1860s to the 1930s there was a great flowering of the illustrator's art in England and America. Artists such as Kate Greenaway, Jessie Willcox Smith, Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and the Robinson brothers, revolutionized the art of children's book illustration during this period.

Their carefully conceived and beautifully executed illustrations made children's books appealing to all ages, and today early editions of their works are sold for vast sums.

Featuring more than 150 illustrations, both colour plates and black & white drawings. Richard Dalby has written biographies of more than fifty of the artists whose talents helped create the Golden Age. Great names, also less well known.
