Carol Day is a fashion model, elegant and assured in a world of intrigue, vividly brought to life in this much-acclaimed newspaper strip with multi-layered adult storylines and superbly detailed and atmospheric artwork.

A wonderful newspaper strip, with its combination of sophisticated stories, rounded characters and always magnificent art, Carol Day  transcends even the best American strips of the time, and yet, despite international distribution, it was never syndicated in the United States.

Created by artist David Wright, she was published in the Daily Mail between 10th September 1956 and 25th May 1967.

Message from the Publisher

Our third Carol Day Story Book is Cousin Hugo, the 25th story, which ran in 1963-1964.

The story features Carol's cousin Hugo and returns us to Carol's beginnings, while reflecting a changing world. The plot revolves around some stolen cash Hugo hides in an African sculpture that he gives to their Uncle Marcus as a gift, and the story bears echoes of the first story, Charles Logan, placing Hugo and con man Vernon Flowers at the center of the action once again.

However, this is a serious crime story in a much darker world, far from that of Charles Logan. Flowers is now a career criminal; Hugo lives on the edge, vastly overrating his cleverness, underrating his risk, and overcoming his residual moral qualms with ease. He's a willing accomplice in a robbery that hospitalizes a man.

Though at first reading, Cousin Hugo can appear to be a side-note to Carol's more usual romantic entanglements and modeling plots, in a fuller context it clearly shows the change in Wright's tone and attitude as the strip evolved and has an important place in the canon.

Cousin Hugo will be the same format as our other story books: Riverside Racket and Last of the Line. It will contain the complete story reproduced from the original art in its original size, continuing our founding principle. In addition, we provide a brief introduction. The art pages will be just like our other books.

To store and display the story books, we've designed a SLIPCASE that fits all three story books. The slipcase also matches the Lance Hallam and Jack Slingsby books on your shelf. The front cover of the slipcase is designed by Brian Bolland. The limited edition slipcase is now in stock.

Cousin Hugo will only be available through the Book Palace and only by pre-order, so if you'd like a copy, don't hesitate! It is available to order now.

Pre-orders end on Sunday, August 3, at which time we will set the print run and go to print, shipping to you in Q4 2025.
