Mark Schultz's 'Carbon' Volumes 1 - 3
The element carbon, common yet versatile, is the binder at the base of life on Earth as well as the source of the rich blacks that run through Mark Schultz's drawings.
Similarly, the Carbon books bind an astonishing array of illustrative art rendered in brush and ink, graphite and carbon pencil, and also introduce more colour than ever before through the artist's increased experimentation with watercolor as an atmospheric element.
Schultz has produced art and stories for comics and speculative fiction for over twenty-five years.
Carbon 1 represents his unique vision more than any other to date. As a special bonus, the artist's fascination with science is explored in his introductory text examining the process of working with a palaeontologist to accurately depict Xenoceratops, a newly discovered dinosaur, accompanied by the preliminary drawings that evolved into the finished work.
Carbon 2 follows its predecessor by three years, and in those years Mark's work has become something more solid, and at times almost sculptural, as he continues to refine his attempts to put to paper the visions he sees in his head. Featuring conceptual studies as well as finishes, Carbon 2 gives us a look into that process.
Carbon 3 also features images from Schultz's Storms at Sea and his depictions of myth and pulp adventure. The inclusion of preliminary drawings along with the finished results provides insight into the decisions the artist makes in the process of moving toward the realization of his initial idea. Beyond his stunning use of brush, ink and graphite, there are examples of Schultz's continuing development as a painter working in watercolour and gouache.
Carbon 3 represents two years of challenges and development in Schultz's work, as he continues to strive to better realize and communicate his vision of human engagement with a largely unknown and always exciting universe. The works found inside this volume are all important markers along his road toward that goal.
