This illustration from 'A Child's History Of England' depicts The Assize of Bread and Ale law passed in England in the 17th century, the law regulated the price, weight and quality of bread and beer. It was the first law in British history to regulate the production and sale of food.

Robert Wilson Matthews born in Edinburgh in 1880 began as an illustrator in the early 20th century. An alumni of The Edinburgh College of Art he is best known for his illustrations in H.W. Meikle's 'Story Of England' (Oliver & Boyd) and the illustrated works of Alexandre Dumas (Collins Clear Press). Matthews took a medical commission circa 1928 and was one of the most well respected medical illustrators of the 20th century.

  Robert Wilson Matthews born in Edinburgh in 1880 (some sources say 1895) and began as an illustrator in the early 20th century. An alumni of The Edinburgh College of Art he is best known for his illustrations in H.W.
