114 On the twentieth of January 1962, the first issue of Look and Learn was published by Fleetway Publications . It came about largely in response to the success of a weekly educational magazine that had been released just one year earlier by the Bristol-based publisher, Purnell. This was an English language edition of the Italian magazine Conoscere ( To Know!) published under the title Knowledge . But where Knowledge had a serious-minded and rather heavy-going look about it, Look & Learn was fresh and innovative, with almost every page proclaiming a new approach to educational publishing. Most remarkable was the imaginative use it made of its centre spread and back cover. Here it introduced the concept of history rendered as visual narrative, relying heavily on the remarkable skills of Ron Embleton and Peter Jackson, both of whom were at once talented artists and authoritative historians. Although Ferdinando Tacconi A brilliant draughtsman and painter, whose talents were matched by his productivity, is profiled by illustrator Ron Tiner.
