47 THOSE WERE THE DAYS! Back in the 1980s the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and London Contemporary Art, introduced an art programme to celebrate the shipping line’s 25th anniversary, and an art collection was carefully selected and commissioned to enhance the beauty of the newest addition to their fleet, The Legend of the Seas. Norwegian architect, Per Høydahl, designed the ship: the art works had to live up to his high standards, and the finished results could only be described as breathtaking. Not surprisingly for a Norwegian company, a Scandinavian influence was much to the fore, and the underlying design concept for the Viking Crown Lounge was the use of stylized forms, characteristic of the Viking Age. Created by Inger Sitter, it is an artistic re-creation of the famous Viking Longboat ‘The Oseberg Ship’ of circa 800 A.D. Constructed from brushed ABOVE: The legendary Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. He made a total of four trips to the Caribbean and South America during the years 1492-1504. The mural painted for the ship the Legend of The Seas which evokes the feel of distant times, is displayed on Deck 6, where it provides a link between the adjacent corridor themes of Spain and Italy.
