90 The Studio: Mark English Jill Bossert, the renowned writer and editor, has written a beautiful book entitled Mark English. She has been involved with The Society of Illustrators in New York for over twenty years, and has edited many of their annuals. She certainly knows her stuff. Mark English was a highly successful illustrator for over thirty years, and received over a hundred awards from arts organisations throughout the United States, and as early as 1967, he was named “Artist of The Year” by the Artists Guild of New York. As an illustrator, English was committed to growth and innovation, constantly setting new standards in his work, often to the surprise of some of his clients, and to the chagrin of some of his peers. He produced his final illustration in 1996, and since then, has devoted himself almost exclusively to making gallery paintings. Bossert writes beautifully, and with an intelligent, and very well observed view of her subject. Her text is
