In 1994, Dave Gaskill on Today had a proper drawing board on a stand, with a proper draughtsman’s swivel stool which was situated in the corner of the features room, with stunning views of the River Thames and Tower Bridge: cartoonist royalty. But there’s no pleasing some people, and he constantly winged about being seated next to the lavatory. I worked on the features art desk designing pages, and when I started my shift at mid-day, Gaskill was usually half way through his drawing, and I had a quick look at what he was doing, marveling at his drawing skills, and the amount of detail that he put into every drawing. In March 1995, the Manchester United footballer Eric Cantona appeared in court for what had been described as ‘the most famous common assault in the history of the English legal system.’ Having been sent off for a foul in a game against Crystal Palace on January 25th 1995, at Selhurst Park in London, Cantona made his way slowly off the pitch towards the dressing room. Matthew Simmons, a shaven-headed Crystal Palace fan, shouted abuse at the Frenchman, and Cantona launched himself over the advertising hoardings and placed his infamous ‘kung fu’ kick firmly on Simmons’ chest. On the day of the case, Gaskill’s cartoon showed a group of ABOVE: The comparisons of David Milliband to a nerdy schoolboy provided ample fodder for Gaskill’s pen, when Milliband achieved the coveted elevation to foreign secretary in 2007.
