This issue of illustrators kicks off with an interview with Mick Brownfield as he looks back on a long and successful career which continues to this day. Mick is an artist whose lifelong obsession with illustration has not only made him a master of his medium but has underscored his art with a never ending series of slyly entertaining reference points which imbue his illustrations with a resonance that goes far beyond the mere fulfilment of an art director’s brief. The work of Brian Sanders has recently been brought to the fore again since he was asked to provide the artwork for the MadMen Season Six poster, using the same technique that first brought his work to the attention of UK andUS art directors in the 1960s. Sanders’ career and art have now spanned over five decades, and as BrynHavord’s text reveals, there ismuchmore to Sanders then has been revealed in the recent media coverage this commission spawned. Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone’s illustrations were everywhere for much of the latter part of the last century. Their work was as familiar to children and their parents as the illustrations of Mabel Lucy Atwell and Kate Greenaway had been to previous generations, but the story of how these twin sisters achieved their enchanting art is less familiar and we are therefore delighted to have the opportunity to share with their story with you. Derek Eyles may have been a little laid back in comparison tomany of his contemporaries, but when it came to creating dynamic and action packed artwork designed to thrill his schoolboy readership, he was in a league of his own. David Ashford reveals muchmore about the man whose art was often used as a guide by editors to show “how it should be done”, especially when depicting horses. Finally, with Book Palace ’ s eagerly anticpated Frank Bellamy’s Heros the Spartan , Bryn Havord castes his eyes over its pages and recalls his days working at the offices of Eagle comics.
