EXTRACTS: Illustrators Issue 4 © 2013 The Book Palace (96 PAGES in Full edition)

96 Letters We received a lot of enthusiastic responses to our second issue of illustrators, but rather than hold back completion of issue three, we decided to publish your responses, comments, and suggestions in issue four. This means that comments on this issue will appear in issue six, but as you can see, we really appreciate all your feedback, and your letters add further insight into the appreciation of the artwork we feature. I received my copy of illustrators two this morning, and I immediately stopped all work to read it. Once again, another great issue! I knew about David Wright’s Carol Day work, but his earlier work is very interesting. And hey, my ad didn’t look bad either! I love Renato Fratini’s work. I’ve known of his movie poster work, but his magazine and paperback work is fantastic. Looking forward to issue three! — Mitch Itkowitz I’ve just received my copy of issue two of illustrators quarterly, and wanted to ‘tip my hat’ to a wonderful job. The feature on David Wright is absolutely fantastic, full of beautiful work from an artist I was only vaguely aware of, and all a working illustrator could need to get them inspired and at the drawing board. You’ll be glad to know that I’ve posted a short feature on issue one on my web site at http://www.wingsart.net/home/2012/09/12/ illustrators-magazine/ which I hope goes some way to help promote this excellent publication. I’ll be sure to recommend issue 2 as well. Many thanks to you and your team. — Christopher King Just got the second issue of your wonderful publication. It’s packed with stuff! I’m desperate to read...such talent. Congratulations and thanks. — Mick Brownfield I want to thank and praise you and Geoff for the super article about my father and Carol Day. Patrick and I were talking about this yesterday and saying how much we owe to you, Geoff, and of course Roger Clarke for reviving interest in my father’s work, it’s lovely to think that he is out there in cyberspace for all to see. Also illustrators makes me realise just how talented and graceful my father’s illustrations were (by the way, the two pencil drawings of the ‘unknown model’ were of my mother as well). Unfortunately all we thought about my father’s efforts whilst we were growing up was that they put food on the table, and clothes for us to wear —with the odd Airfix kit thrown in. In fact I was more interested in hismodel aeroplanes than his strip cartoons when I was a child. When Patrick, and Nicky and I became adults, we were too busy with our own careers to fully appreciate who it was that gave us what talent we possess—as the Yanks would say “Was it ever thus”. Anyway I suspect that the disappearing reputation of my father’s work has something to do with the fact that when he died, illustration in this country was considered ‘trash’. I think that if he had been French and Carol Day had been Carol Jour, his memory and that of his creations would have been much higher—they do things better out there! But now you and the others are correcting that, and both Patrick and I are very grateful. — Paul Wright It arrived today… the beautiful illustrators. Superb production. Wonderful… Congratulations to you all. I received number two. So after I have received number three I will subscribe asking you to include the first edition (number one and then number four ) so that I don’t miss any from the word GO. I love it ! Well done! I’m so proud to be included in a feature. Thank you! — Peter Maddocks I’ve received my subscriber’s copy of illustrators two and again the quality is superb. The reproductions are wonderful, and you really have done justice to David Wright and Raymond Sheppard, as well as others in this issue. I hadn’t realised that there were Amazon versions of the Carol Day strip available. Seriously, you guys are doing such a fantastic job and I feel privileged to be involved in my small way. — Norman Boyd ● We really appreciate your help Norman!
