Michael Johnson’s work, with it’s emblematic design, and powerful use of paint seemed not only at one with the times, but also to embody the visceral energy of an erawhere youth and vitalitywere in an ascendancy, whichnow seems all the more remarkable with the passing of time. We are very fortunate to have been able to secure the talents of bothMike, and his one time art director and friend, BrynHavord to bring this feature to life. Another unique and restlessly inventive artist, whose work first came to prominence in those heady days, is the illustrator Chris McEwan. His eclectic tastes have informed some of the most remarkable, and captivating artwork ever to be seen in print. Chris’ work has appeared across a wide variety of media, and his enthusiasm and energy still continues to provide dazzling solutions to the most prosaic of briefs. It was my privilege to be able to chat with Chris about his work and career, and the resultant interview is presented here with some superb examples of his work spanning the decades. Rounding out the issue, Jeremy Briggs and yours truly take a look at the fascinating world of cutaway artist extraordinaire Leslie Ashwell Wood,. While your senses are still spinning, Johnny Mains will drive a stake into your quivering heart as he opens the door to his mausoleum, and shares with you the story of the artists who added several layers of grue to the covers of the Pan Book of Horror Stories, one of the UK’smost notorious paperback series. Added to which, a look at the story behind one of Walter Wyles (soon to be featured in illustrators ) most memorable illustrations, plus a page of book reviews and your responses to issue 2 of illustrators, all go tomaking this one of ourmost engrossing issues to date –we hope you enjoy reading it asmuch as we have in bringing the whole thing together for you.
