36 Hannes Bok One of the early Science Fiction illustrators who perhaps best repre‐ sented the genre during the first half of the twentieth century went under the apparently mysterious name of Hannes Bok. Bok will forever be remembered for his weird, yet accomplished glazed paintings (following the same method of his mentor Maxfield Parrish); for the brilliant colours he used and the out- of-this-world alien creatures he painted, and also his stippled black and white drawings (actually graphite over pebbled board). Yet, like some of his counter‐ parts, died in poverty and was soon forgotten until he was revived by fans nos‐ talgic of the early years (1930s-1950s) of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Born Wayne Francis Woodard in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1914, Bok’s childhood could not be considered a pleasant one. After his parents had lost FACING PAGE: Hocus Pocus Universe , mixed media on board. Science Stories cover, October 1953 (although painted in 1950). A perfect example of Bok’s use of glazing.
