Kelly was an incrediWbly prolific and able artist, who was not only one of the premier illustrators of sci-fi pulps from the fifties, but also one of the first cover artists for MAD magazine. You might also remember him as the artist who painted the sixth album cover for rock band Queen. Coming from England, Yvonne Gilbert has illustrated everything from children’s books to postage stamps for the Royal Mail, and fairy-tales to record sleeves. Her artwork is mostly done with colour pencils and with such attention to detail that a moderately-detailed illustration takes her about a week to complete. Her originals are held in private collections including those of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the late H.R.H. Princess Margaret. Belgian illustrator Laurent Durieux has made a name for himself with his retro-style movie poster silkscreens resembling old engravings, although created and drawn on a computer! He has produced these posters for Mondo in the US, and his intricate designs have proven, aside of being aptly excecuted, that you can still work in an old-fashioned way using modern technology. We round up our features this issue with early last century’s most inspirational cartoonist, Heinrich Kley, a German artist who has been an influence on people as diverse as Frank Frazetta and the Disney animators. His pen and ink sketches would eventually be censored by the Third Reich regime, which led him afterwards to do paintings about the German metallurgy industry instead. And lastly, Norman Boyd tells us about the origin of the comic book appearing in an episode of the iconic series ‘The Avengers’ (not the Marvel superheroes but the classic British TV series). DC The opinions expressed in illustrators are those of the writers, and are not necessarily those of the editor and publishers.
